What the Ten Commandments Reveal About God and You
The Ten Commandments! You’ve heard about it right, right?! You might have even memorized them all. That’s great!
It’s one of those Bible topics that I think pretty much everyone has heard about. Our Sunday school teachers served us well.
How did they come about? What do they mean? And why do they continue to hold power even though our world is constantly rewriting its own rules?
This is the first post in a three-part series on the Ten Commandments that get at these questions. It’s one thing to memorize the text, it’s another thing to fully embrace them and live them out.
The Story Behind the Ten Commandments
The Ten Commandments first appear in Exodus 20… and again in Deuteronomy 5. I didn’t know that, did you?
Moving on…
God gave Moses the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai after leading the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt. Picture that for a moment. Here’s a group of people who had spent generations under the rule of others, finally standing free. And they’re learning how to live as God’s people instead of captives.
Before giving Moses the Ten Commandments, God brought the Israelites to camp at the base of Mount Sinai. He told them they would be His chosen people if they obeyed His covenant, and so they prepared for three days, washing their clothes and keeping away from the mountain.
On the third day, thunder, lightning, and a thick cloud surrounded Mount Sinai as God descended in fire. The mountain shook, and from within the smoke, God called Moses and spoke the Ten Commandments for all to hear. How majestic!
These commandments were a covenant, a sacred agreement between God and His people. Through the commandments, God was saying, “This is what it looks like to walk with Me, to live differently, and to honor the freedom I’ve given you.”
They’re meant to teach what it looks like to love God fully and treat others rightly.
The Ten Commandments
Here is the short form list of the Ten Commandments:
- You shall have no other gods before Me.
- You shall not make idols.
- You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.
- Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
- Honor your father and your mother.
- You shall not murder.
- You shall not commit adultery.
- You shall not steal.
- You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
- You shall not covet.
I think a misconception is that God was trying to restrict joy or make life difficult.
Rather, when God gave these commandments, he was giving boundaries for a free people, guidelines that protect what’s good and preserve what matters most. They form the foundation for living with love, wisdom, and respect.
Each commandment reveals something about God’s character. His holiness. His desire for honesty, faithfulness, and rest. His care for relationships and justice.
Our world is filled with so much moral fickleness and turmoil. Watch the news for 30 minutes and you’ll see what I mean. Yet God’s words still stand because His truth doesn’t change with the times.
Jesus’ Teachings on the Ten Commandments
When Jesus taught about the commandments, He went deep (as He usually does). In Matthew 5 (the Sermon on the Mount), He showed that God’s law is about motives.
Anger can wound like violence. Lust can betray trust like adultery. Words can harm like weapons.
Later on in Matthew, the Pharisees attempted to challenge Jesus by asking Him what the greatest commandment was.
“Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” (Matthew 22:37-39)
Jesus was showing that every single one of the commandments points to God’s love. For us, true obedience begins in the heart and following the commandments is our living in response to it.
Freedom Within Boundaries
It might sound strange, but the Ten Commandments are actually a gift of freedom.
Think about it. Freedom without boundaries always leads to chaos. God knew that real freedom is found when we live within His design. The commandments protect what helps us flourish. Worship, honesty, loyalty, peace, and rest.
They’re blessings. They keep us close to what’s true and far from what’s destructive.
How to Reflect on the Commandments
Here are a few ways to make this study stay with you.
Read them slowly and prayerfully. Ask God to show which ones speak to where you are right now and what your greatest needs are.
Journal through them. Write what each commandment reveals about God and about yourself.
Apply them practically. Think about how each one could shape your choices this week, from your typical routine to your conversations.
See them through grace. When you stumble (oh boy, do I stumble), remember that Jesus fulfilled the law perfectly. His grace covers our failures and invites us back to try again with humility and love.

Looking Ahead
In the next part of this series, we’ll walk through the first five of the commandments more closely. I hope you read it!
More often than not, we are asked to compromise in our daily lives. Through what we hear, what we see, and what we do. Sometimes I find that I’m desensitized to it.
But the Ten Commandments call us back to what’s eternal, a way of living that honors God and uplifts others. Because when we understand these commandments, we begin to see that they guide us to become who we were created to be, in God’s image.
Following God’s wisdom is written on our hearts.
