As a kid, I had to memorize Psalm 23. As did all the other kids in my youth group. Reciting the phrase “shadow of death” was a bit jarring to say the least. C’mon, I can’t be the only one who felt like this!

But committing a verse to memory isn’t the same thing as understanding or appreciating its meaning.

As an adult, I see Psalm 23 referenced over and over again. The child in me wants to say, oooh I know that one! The adult in me prefers to study its significance to better know why I see it over and over again.

So if like me you have it memorized (good on you!), but want to get at its deeper meaning, then you’re in good company.

Background on Psalm 23

Psalm 23 is only six verses long, so it’s simple to memorize. That’s one reason why it’s a popular verse for children to learn (me included).

Psalm 23 was written by David, the shepherd boy who became king. David knew what it meant to lead sheep. To guide, protect, and provide for them. He also knew what it meant to be led by God through triumph and trial, as king.

For David, calling the Lord his shepherd came from experience. He had lived as a shepherd and he had lived under God’s guidance.

It’s a poem and prayer about God.

Psalm 23:1

“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.”

To say “The Lord is my shepherd” is to place ourselves under His care.

“I lack nothing” doesn’t mean I have everything I want. Haha, if only...

To me, it means that in God’s presence, I have what matters most. I think about the countless times in my life when I’ve felt unsure or restless. And then I remember that being guided by God is more than enough. He sees what I need, and He provides in His way and timing.

Psalm 23:2

“He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters.”

Modern day life unfortunately has different plans. Deadlines. Emails. Phone calls. Pings. Alarms. Meetings. Responsibilities. I can go on and on. Where are those green pastures??

But even the rest I envision from daily life is an earthly rest, like trying to get the recommended 6-8 hours of sleep each night.

This verse contains such beautiful imagery. Green pastures and quiet waters. It’s a picture of rest, God-given rest.

I see God leading me to sit by a still lake in the late afternoon and Him saying, “Breathe. I’ve got you.”

God wants us to rest in Him.

Psalm 23:3

“He refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.”

Other versions of the Bible use “He restores” for this verse. I remember being absolutely parched one hot summer’s day, and the waiter refreshed my drink for me, without having to ask.

It was exactly what I needed and I didn’t have to say anything. I’ve also seen a piece of furniture that was headed for the dumpster get fully restored, it looks like it was brand new.

As humans, we need renewal, we need to be refreshed, we need to be restored. There are days when my soul feels tired, not just my body. Thankfully God is in the business of refreshing, of restoring what’s worn down.

Have you ever done a trust exercise? I have. It involves two partners, one partner is blindfolded and the other isn’t. The sighted partner has to lead the blindfolded partner through a series of obstacles. I like to think I’m a trusting person…yet I would peek out at the bottom of my blindfold to make sure I wouldn’t trip.

“He guides me along the right paths…” I don’t always know the next step. Sometimes the weight is so heavy it’s like I can’t even move. My prayer is for God to guide me. Even when the way forward is unclear, I believe that He leads me for His purpose and glory.

Psalm 23:4

“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

The version I memorized made reference to the “valley of the shadow of death.” This verse is often quoted in times of sorrow, and for good reason. It acknowledges that dark valleys do exist. Illness, loss, grief, anxiety, pain, uncertainty, and death are all dark valleys for me.

Fortunately it doesn’t end there, as it’s followed by “you are with me.” We are not alone. God is with us.

The mention of the rod and staff speaks of a shepherd’s tools for guidance and protection. I like to think of them as symbols of God’s care. Even in my hardest days, His presence brings comfort and direction.

Psalm 23:5

“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.”

This verse transitions to an image of abundance. A table prepared, a head anointed, these are all signs of blessing. The phrase “my cup overflows” calls me to notice the abundance already present in my life.

You may have heard of this song…

“Count your many blessings, name them one by one, and it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.”

I think about how often I overlook the many blessings in front of me. A warm meal, a safe place to sleep, family, friends who encourage me. Caramel macchiatos. Laughter. A Savior who died for me. These are signs of God’s abundant provision.

Psalm 23:6

“Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

This final verse is a declaration of confidence. It starts with “Surely”. That means listen up, pay attention to what follows!

Well, it’s His goodness and love, and they will follow me every day…forever.

That’s a promise of security and assurance that’s hard to put into words.

Dwelling in God’s presence is something we can all experience now, through prayer, through Scripture, through being aware of His nearness.
