Bible Verses About Perseverance and Endurance
I’m not sure about you, but my life never moves in a straight line. Some stretches of my life are like a maze of stairs. I know that I’m moving and taking steps. But I can’t tell if I’m going up or down, backwards or forwards.
Other periods last far longer than I would have imagined, and others ask more of me than I thought I want to give.
*It’s frustrating.*
Just last week, I literally said out loud, “I wish I can just fast forward!” But life isn’t like a Netflix movie where I can skip through the scary bits and get to the happy ending. Or better yet, when I pause the movie and look up the movie plot so I know that the main character makes it out ok.
There is no remote control to my life. I have to move through each day just like you do. But that’s the beauty of Scripture. Even though we know how it all ends (spoiler alert: it’s a happy ending!), it’s a guide for all of the in-between. God’s plan is always working, even when I don’t have all the answers.
Here are some Bible verses on endurance and perseverance to help move you forward.
Bible Verses on Staying the Course with God’s Strength
†
James 1:12
"Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him."
When life gets intense and I’m juggling things I never expected, this verse proves that staying the course is more than just pushing through. It’s about growing stronger through it.
I don’t need to have all the answers or feel “on” every day. I just need to keep choosing to walk in faith. The way I hold on in the hard times, especially in the hard times, matters to God. And that gives me fuel to keep going.

Romans 5:3–4
"Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope."
Alright, as I’m a Star Wars fan. Now I know that Star Wars isn’t real. But, boy, there is so much suffering and yet perseverance.
I’m re-watching a lot of the films and shows and I never appreciated how much the concept of hope is woven throughout the entire franchise. A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, characters band together repeatedly to overthrow evil forces in the name of hope. Hope for a better future.
What I’m building through tough spots is the kind of character that anchors me. Every challenge stretches me in ways I can’t always see at first. But later, I look back and notice I’ve become more rooted, more hopeful, and more sure of who I am in Christ.

Hebrews 12:1
"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us"
There’s something powerful about knowing that I’m not running alone. Others before me have fought their way through storms, and that pushes me to stay focused. I’ve had to let go of a lot (e.g., fear, distractions, unrealistic expectations), so I can run my own race and not someone else’s.

Galatians 6:9
"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."
There have been times when I feel like I’ve given and given and wondered if it was even making a difference. At the end of it all, it’s like, “why even bother?”
I’d be lying if I said I’ve removed this kind of sentiment from my thinking. It's a struggle.
This verse helps me lean into the truth that the seeds I plant today will grow. Even if I can’t see it yet. God’s timing is His timing, and He never wastes my efforts.

Philippians 4:13
"I can do all this through him who gives me strength."
Whenever I start to feel like I’ve hit a wall, this is a good verse to go back to. I literally don’t have the strength on my own. So it can’t come from me alone. God steps in when I’m running low, and His strength fills the gaps I can’t cover on my own.
Let Go and let God.

Isaiah 40:31
"But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."
Reading this breathes life back into me. There’s the word hope again! Soar, run, walk. These are all powerful verbs that propel us forward.
When I trust God fully, I can move forward with a different kind of energy, one that doesn’t drain easily or give up halfway through.

2 Thessalonians 3:13
"And as for you, brothers and sisters, never tire of doing what is good."
Some days it feels like doing the right thing is hard. Especially when it goes unnoticed.
“Hey, did anyone see this incredible thing that I did?!”
But these words call for us to never tire, knowing that goodness is always worth choosing. Even when no one is watching. Especially when no one is watching! I aim to be someone who keeps doing good, not for applause, but because it reflects who God is.
I have to admit, this one is still a work in progress for me.

Colossians 1:11
"Being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience."
I used to think that endurance was pushing through with clenched teeth. Like finishing a run in the sweltering heat (which I don’t recommend by the way).
But this verse reframes it for me. Receiving strength from God, yes, supplies us with endurance that we need. But also with patience, even when things seem to be moving ever so slowly.

2 Timothy 4:7
"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith."
This is the kind of legacy I want. Not perfection (oof, I’m far from perfect), not having all the answers, but staying faithful to the path I’ve been given.
I have to constantly remind myself that it’s not about speed or success by the world’s standards, it’s about faithfulness, and staying true to what God placed in my heart. Keeping the faith.

Psalm 37:24
"Though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand."
When’s the last time you stumbled or tripped on something? I stumble far too many times than I should admit. And it’s always awkward. Arms flailing. Whatever is in my hands spills everywhere. It’s usually coffee.
Yet in this verse, God does not let us fall. It brings me peace knowing that God isn’t waiting for me to trip. He’s holding me steady, even when I feel unsure. I might wobble, but I’m not going down because He’s with me.
