Peaceful reading scene with an open book, lit candles, lilac flowers, and chocolate by a dewy window, evoking a quiet moment of reflection, prayer, or devotional time.

I don’t know about you, but I can always use more Bible study in my life. One lesson that I attended a few months ago stood out to me. Not so much because of the scripture for the day, but for how to approach scripture. We spent our time together learning how to deconstruct a single passage to really understand what the words on the page mean.

Depth over breadth.

Bear with me a moment, but I’d like to take a similar approach with a phrase I hear often, unfailing grace. I’ve heard it in song lyrics, and I hear it in sermons. But I haven’t spent much time really deconstructing it’s meaning. I’m a visual person so it helps concepts stick in my mind.

Unfailing. It means something that never gives out, never breaks, never goes away. I’m reminded of the battery commercials with the Energizer Bunny. I envision that pink fluffy bunny in black sunglasses drumming on and on. “Still going and going!" Google it you have no idea what I’m talking about.

Grace. In simplest terms, it’s a favor. In this context, is an unmerited favor/help/forgiveness from God. It’s not early, it’s given freely. I envision a hand extended out, offering to help.

So when I put them together, to me unfailing grace is the pink Energizer Bunny with his hand extended out offering to help.

Thank you for sticking with me! I sure hope you carry that visual with you as you read the verses below.

The real takeaway with my silly imagery is that I’m a passive participant in all of this. I’m not doing anything. Everything is coming from God. It’s His mercy, His love, His unrelenting nature. Poured out for all us, if we want it.

Romans 5:20

“But where sin increased, grace increased all the more.”

Got sin? Just kidding, you don’t have to answer that. God’s grace isn’t limited by my past. When things in my life pile up and feel too far gone, this verse tells me that His grace is more.

I can literally never reach the edge of it. God knows the full story and still offers more. That’s how sure His grace is.

John 1:16

“Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given.”

When I think of fullness, I think of when I’ve eaten so much dessert on Christmas and I feel like my belly is going to burst. I’ve reached my physical limits for food capacity in my stomach.

God is beyond any physical limitations. He doesn’t run low like my car when I forget to fill it with gas. I’ve needed grace more than once, and He always provides it. It’s a 24-hour grace buffet, you can keep loading up and you’ll never get a tummy ache!

Titus 2:11

“For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people.”

I’m no theologian but I read “all people” in this passage. I’m not seeing any qualifiers like income requirements or a minimum test score to pass. That means that I don’t need to qualify myself to be offered salvation. God already made that decision, He’s the boss and He’s offers grace to all people.

James 4:6

“But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: ‘God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.’”

What does it mean to be humble? I looked it up to be sure. It means being modest, downplaying one’s importance. I think of all the people I’ve encountered who get gold stars at being arrogant and declaring their importance above all others. It’s 100% opposite of that.

God responds to honesty. When I stop pretending (oh, and I’m really good at pretending) and come to Him with a genuine, open heart, He meets me with grace. Repeatedly! Grace increases where there’s humility and openness.

Romans 3:23-24

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.”

We’re back to the word “all” again. Twice is in this verse, it’s that important. Grace levels the playing field. Everyone needs it.

Why?

“For all have sinned...” Me, you, my favorite barista at Starbucks. We’re all lumped in there together. Yet we all receive grace the same way, freely. Her adding extra drizzles of caramel sauce to my tall non-fat caramel Frappuccino is definitely going to make my day. But it doesn’t buy her favor with God. Grace already made it possible through Jesus Christ our Lord. For all.

Acts 20:32

“Now I commit you to God and to the word of his grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.”

Whenever I hear the word commit, it’s usually in a negation connation. What crime did she commit? He won’t commit to the relationship. Maybe it’s all those detective shows I watch.

But to commit is to entrust or to bind. We are entrusted and bound to God. We are also entrusted and bound to the word of His grace, His unmerited favor/help/forgiveness. That’s a beautiful thing!

1 Peter 5:10

“And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast."

I remember years ago as a kid, we didn’t have caller ID on our home phone. So we never knew who was calling. When we finally got caller ID, it was the ushering of a new era. I could screen calls!

If it was a friend calling, it was time to go out and have fun (answer). If it was my Mom, she would be calling to make sure I was doing my homework (don’t answer). C’mon, I’m sure you screen your calls too!

Thankfully we don’t need caller ID when God calls us. We know it’s Him. And He is calling us in this verse. And it’s not about doing our homework. The God of all grace is calling us to His eternal glory in Christ. He restores what’s worn down. He gives stability and strength that lasts. His grace works through the whole process.

Hebrews 4:16

“Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

Not being a Bible expert, I was so nervous to study the Book of Revelation for the first time. Too much lingering nonsense from my childhood, I suppose. Like something would happen to me after reading it. So I avoided it for years.

And something did happen to me when I finally read it. I learned about God’s throne (Rev 4). Spectacular!

We are invited to approach His throne of grace with confidence. I can come in the middle of struggle and still be met with grace.

Summary of God’s Unfailing Grace in the Bible

God's grace holds firm, and it meets us exactly where we are, humble and a mess. These verses remind me that grace is steady, strong, and already at work in my life, and in yours.

Bonus points if the Energizer Bunny is still on your mind. Thanks and have a blessed day.
