What Is the Gospel? Understanding God’s Good News for Us
Growing up going to church, I remember every Sunday it was time for the gospel.
A reading from the Gospel of John...
Today’s gospel is about...
Our takeaway from the gospel should be...
I figured it was important, but can you believe that I didn’t actually know what it meant?
The word “gospel” literally means “good news.” What’s good news in your life? Your cousin had a baby, that’s good news! You landed a new business client, that’s good news! The offer on your dream home was accepted, that’s good news! Right?
I know it’s a bit tongue in cheek to set it up this way, but my point is that the good news the gospel is referring to is far beyond these examples. It’s the good news of Jesus Christ, the message of God’s love, and our salvation.
In this post, I want to walk through what the Bible says about the Gospel. And if your cousin did have a baby, I’m so happy for you!
The Gospel as God’s Saving Plan
†
Romans 1:16
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.”
The gospel is described as the power of God. That means the gospel is capable of bringing real transformation.
When I think about God’s saving plan, it’s something He set in motion way long before I was born, and yet it reaches into my life now. The idea that His salvation is available to everyone who believes reminds me that the gospel is not limited by background, status, or history.
This takes the pressure off of trying to “earn” anything. My role is to believe, receive, and share what God has already accomplished through Jesus. When I share the gospel, I’m simply pointing to the power of God, not to my own ability to convince someone.
The Gospel Shows God’s Love Through Jesus
†
John 3:16
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
I’ve heard this verse since childhood (at lots of basketball games!), but it wasn’t until later in my life that it hit me how personal it is. God so loved the world. And that includes us. His love is demonstrated in action: giving His Son so that we can have life.
This truth shapes the way I see Jesus. He’s more than just a historical figure who lived and died. He’s the gift of God’s love made real. A gift for us. Every time I reflect on this, I’m reminded that the gospel is ultimately about relationship. God wanted to be with us so much that He made the way Himself.
When I read John 3:16 now, I hear both an invitation and a promise. The invitation is to believe in Him, and the promise is eternal life, life that begins the second I trust Him and continues without end.
The Gospel Brings Peace with God
†
Romans 5:1
“Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Peace with God is something I treasure. What is peace? Is it the absence of conflict? No. It’s more than that. It’s our deep assurance that our relationship with Him is whole and secure.
Before I understood the gospel, I often felt like my connection to God depended on my performance. Honestly, I still feel this way some days. Whether I’m doing enough good things or avoiding enough bad ones.
Like the justice scale, I don’t want it to tip too much in the wrong direction. Yet Romans 5:1 makes it clear that peace comes through faith in Jesus, not through my personal track record.
This changes how I approach prayer, worship, and even the challenges of daily life. I’m not trying to win God’s approval (because I can’t). We already have it because of Jesus.
The Gospel Is an Invitation to New Life
†
2 Corinthians 5:17
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
I’m not sure about you, but I get so excited when I get an invitation. To a wedding, birthday party, it doesn’t matter. I get excited because it means there’s something to celebrate.
Isn’t that what this Bible verse is, an invitation? One of the most beautiful parts of the gospel is that it brings new life, a complete renewal. That’s definitely worth celebrating!
Even though I’m no gardener (well, I try), I think of it like a garden that’s been overrun with weeds. You don’t only trim them back, you yank them out fully by the roots and plant something new, something better. That’s what God does through the gospel. He plants His Spirit in us, and new life begins to grow.
This new creation reality helps me to not define myself by past mistakes or old patterns. Instead, I’m learning to live in the identity God has given me.
The Gospel Gives Us a Living Hope
†
1 Peter 1:3
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.”
Hope is one of the gospel’s greatest gifts. It’s a living hope that is anchored in the resurrection of Jesus.
Can you think of a time when you’ve lost all hope? It’s one of the worst feelings. It’s like I can’t see a path forward, like I’m stumbling in the darkness.
But this verse reminds me that my hope doesn’t come from circumstances. It comes from the unshakable truth that Jesus is alive.
Because of the gospel, our future is secure. We can face uncertainty with confidence, knowing that God’s promises are real and that His goodness is not confined to this life alone.
The Gospel Calls Us to Share the Good News
†
Matthew 28:19–20
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
This Bible verse is from the Great Commission, where Jesus instructs the disciples to go out and spread the gospel. Everywhere. The gospel is meant to be shared, both in words and in the way we live.
How can we share the gospel? Do we all need to travel the world to do so? I don’t think so, but that’s just my opinion. To me, sharing the gospel takes different forms. Sometimes it’s through honest conversations about faith. Sometimes it’s through our actions of service. Sometimes it’s through a blog post from someone who is shy.
We’re never alone in sharing His message. Jesus promises His presence as we go.

Living the Gospel Daily
When I wake up each morning, I have the opportunity to remember that I’m loved, forgiven, and I’m sent out into the world with a purpose.
Living the gospel daily means letting it inform how I treat others, how I handle challenges, and how I spend my time. It means being quick to offer grace, ready to serve, and always anchored in hope. These are all works in progress for me!
The gospel is God’s good news. The message of His love, His saving power, and His promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ. My hope is that as you reflect on these truths, you’ll see the gospel as a reality to live in fully.
