A woman sitting with an open Bible on her lap, hands gently clasped in prayer as she reflects on Jesus quotes during her quiet time.

I love Bobby McFerrin’s song, “Don't Worry Be Happy.” It’s catchy, it’s fun, it’s a classic. The problem though is it’s easier said (or sung) than done.

How many times do I worry on a daily basis? When I don’t hear back from a family member? I worry. When the last flight of the night back home is cancelled? I worry. When someone I know isn’t a believer? I worry. And the list goes on and on and on.

Maybe for you it’s when you open your bank account. Other times, it’s replaying a conversation and wondering if you said the wrong thing. Tossing and turning in bed. Sleepless nights. Scrolling on your phone trying to distract yourself.

And really in the back of your mind you’re thinking, “God, are You even hearing me?”

We ALL know worry. And Jesus knew it too. He understood how it pulls at our faith, drains our joy, and sometimes makes us forget how deeply cared for we are.

In the Bible, Jesus reminds us God is always near. These scriptures are comforting because they draw us back to trust when we need that reassurance.

Why Jesus Spoke About Worry

It’s easy to think that our worries are things unique to us. Email, deadlines, emergencies, tuition costs, or mortgage payments.

Wrong!

Even in Jesus’ time, people worried about their future, their needs, their finances, their families, and their safety.

Jesus understood that worry can cloud our spiritual vision. It leads us to focus on the problem…rather than the One who holds the solution. Worry makes us feel alone, even though God is present.

Jesus simply reminds us that we don’t carry our concerns by ourselves.

Matthew 6:25

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear.”

Jesus starts by naming the common fears people held then. Food. Provision. Appearance. Status. The basic “What will I do? Will I be provided for? Will it be enough?”

God already knows.

Notice that He doesn’t dismiss the concern. Instead He lifts our eyes beyond it. Worry often begins with survival questions. Will I be okay? Will my family be safe? What if I can't afford this?

God already sees them.

When we believe God sees what we need, worry loses some of its power.

Takeaway thought: Whenever worry whispers, “How will I manage this?” respond with, “God already knows.”

Matthew 6:27

“Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?”

What a direct and practical question.

Worry tries to convince us that overthinking will help us solve something. That stress somehow equals responsibility. That anxiety somehow equals preparation. Is that ever the case? No!

Jesus clarifies this for us… worry drains our time. It takes our peace. It clouds our faith.

So then why do we cling to it?

Because it makes me feel like I’m at least doing something. Hello Miss Busy Body.

But Jesus shows us that trust, real trust, is doing something too. Trust is an act of handing it over.

Takeaway thought: Worry uses energy. Trust uses faith. One drains you, the other lifts you.

Matthew 6:34

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

This verse is almost like Jesus stepping into our future-thinking minds.

I often live two lives at once. Today, and next week, all in my head.

I constantly carry tomorrow’s situations into today’s strength. And that’s why I get overwhelmed. Because God gives strength for today, not for imaginary problems we haven’t even faced yet. Right?

I don’t think this discourages planning. Planning is practical!

But planning and worrying are not the same. Planning uses information and trust. Worry uses up imagination and fear.

If God gives fresh grace each day…then today’s grace is enough for today.

Takeaway thought: When tomorrow is too much, stay in today. God’s peace is delivered in daily portions.

John 14:1

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.”

Here, Jesus is speaking to His disciples right before His arrest. This, of course, was a time of anxiety, confusion, and fear. And instead of giving them a detailed explanation of what was going on, Jesus gave them assurance.

We don’t have to understand everything to be at peace.

Belief doesn’t mean we understand every detail (no matter how hard I try). It means we trust the One who does.

Jesus is inviting us to move from general belief (“I believe in God”) to personal trust (“I trust Him with my situation”).

I already believe He exists. Now I need to let my heart believe that He is involved.

Takeaway thought: Peace begins when belief becomes personal.

†

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

This is Jesus at His most tender. He’s directly speaking to the drained, the tired, and the overwhelmed.

Notice that He’s not saying to fix ourselves before coming to Him?

He simply says, Come as you are.

Weary means excessive exertion. Reluctant. Exhausted.

Burdened means experiencing hardship. Distressed. Weighed down.

And He invites us to come with our unanswered prayers and our tired spirit.

He is offering relief. It’s the feeling of finally letting go of what you were never meant to hold all by yourself.

Takeaway thought: Jesus offers strength we cannot provide for ourselves.

Luke 12:32

“Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.”

The words little flock show how protective and loving Jesus is. God provides our needs, and He delights in doing so.

We don’t have to beg for His attention. We’re already held in it.

Not only is Jesus saying not to worry, He’s saying, Look how loved you are. Look how seen you are. Look how protected you are.

Takeaway thought: When you feel insignificant, remember who holds your life in His hands.
