The 7 "I Am" Statements of Jesus in the Gospel of John
Years ago when I was taking Spanish lessons, I recall learning about the verb “to be”. I was so confused because there are two verbs, ser and estar. And my Spanish teacher had to keep correcting me because I would misuse “I am (soy >> ser) and “I am” (estoy >> estar). They both mean “I am” but in different contexts.
Like soy de los Estados Unidos (I’m from the U.S.) or estoy cansada (I’m tired). Hey, I did pass the class!
When Jesus says “I Am,” He’s not worried about the use of the correct verb. He’s revealing something deeply personal, both about who He is and what that means for us.
They’re declarations. Jesus reveals exactly who God is. We don’t have to guess what He’s like...Jesus made it clear.
Let’s walk through each of the “I Am” statements Jesus made in John's Gospel and reflect on what He is really saying.
“I Am the Bread of Life”
†
John 6:35
“Then Jesus declared, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.’”
No, Jesus isn’t offering a snack to eat. After all, a snack is only a quick fix and I’ll be hungry again in 10 minutes.
He offers the kind of fulfillment that goes deeper than any temporary fix. When I chase after things I think will satisfy me (e.g., success, approval, control) I usually end up feeling drained.
But Jesus is more than enough. Not only spiritually, but emotionally and mentally too. He is our sustenance for life. When I pause to “feed” on His words or simply sit quietly with Him, I find peace that lasts longer than anything else I’ve tried.
“I Am the Light of the World”
†
John 8:12
“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’”
Simply put, darkness is the absence of light. Light makes things visible. Not just to the naked eye, but a holiness. Illumination. Knowing. Awareness. God’s revelation.
Some days feel confusing. Decisions pile up, and I am overwhelmed with emotions. This verse encourages me to look to Jesus because He lights the way. Even when I take a wrong turn (you ever try driving in the dark?), His presence still leads me forward. I ask for light, just enough for the next step, and trust that more will come when it's time.
“I Am the Gate”
†
John 10:7
“Therefore Jesus said again, ‘Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep.’”
This “I Am” statement feels protective. Jesus is both the way in and the place of safety. I’ve walked through periods of uncertainty where I didn’t know who or what to trust. Let me tell you, it hurts to put your trust in the wrong person.
But here’s what I come back to, if Jesus is the gate, then He’s the one guarding what comes in and what goes out. That brings a kind of peace I can’t fully explain. It’s like access to the VIP lounge (but way better!) and I have in an out privileges. He’s letting me in, and He’s keeping me secure.
“I Am the Good Shepherd”
†
John 10:11
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”
Shepherds work hard. They guide their flocks of sheep to graze, they protect them from predators, and they keep track of each and every sheep. So there’s something comforting about the image of a shepherd. Someone who sees, guides, protects, and stays close.
I feel like I’m the unruly sheep that’s not quite keeping up with the rest of the flock. I’m down by the stream focused on my reflection while everyone else is chowing down up the hill.
But I’m not alone or overlooked. Jesus doesn’t just care from a distance. He’s right there next to me at the stream...gently leading me away from the coyote that was ready to pounce. He’s already given everything for me, which makes it easier to trust His care.
“I Am the Resurrection and the Life”
†
John 11:25
“Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die.’”
We’ve all experienced loss, in some form or fashion. This “I Am” statement doesn’t necessarily take away the grief, but it gives the grief somewhere to go.
Jesus is life. In the face of endings, disappointments, or heartbreaks, this truth shows me that nothing is wasted in His hands. He brings things back to life. “Lazarus, come out!”
Hope, courage, even dreams that are buried. I hold onto Him when things in my life feel like they’re falling apart (which is often).
“I Am the Way and the Truth and the Life”
†
John 14:6
“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’”
I drive with GPS all the time. Not because I need directions, but so I can be alerted to traffic accidents and lane closures, etc. The thing about GPS is that there are always multiple routes and options to get to my destination. Tolls/no tolls, highways/no highways, etc.
Jesus isn’t a GPS option, He’s the way. I’ve spent a lot of time chasing good advice, reading books, and second-guessing decisions. I do like getting advice from others and reading is a great hobby.
But Jesus is more than a set of instructions or a how-to guide. He is truth I can walk with. And when I focus on Him, things start to line up in ways I can’t plan.
“I Am the True Vine”
†
John 15:5
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”
This one speaks directly to my tendency to hustle. I like to accomplish, perform, and prove. Rinse and repeat.
But this flips all of that. True growth comes from staying connected to Jesus. When I stay close to Him, the rest follows. I stop chasing pressure and start paying attention to what’s right in front of me. That’s what helps me grow in a way that my completed to-do list will never measure up to.
