Bible Verse Wisdom from God’s Own Words in the Old Testament
I find that some passages stay with me because they’re motivational Bible verses, or I read certain Scriptures for encouragement in difficult times. Nothing wrong with that.
What I like about the “I Am” statements in the Old Testament is that they’re personal. God speaks straight to us, His people and tells us who He is.
I’m picking up where I left off with my other post, because there are so many of them! Here are seven more verses that reveal God’s character. Protector, promise-keeper, healer, holy one.
†
Genesis 15:1
"After this, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: 'Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.'"
I’m not sure about you, but when I pray, I tend to ask God for a breakthrough. I want answers. Progress. Something measurable. But instead of results (at least the ones I envision), He brings me back to this: I am your shield, your very great reward.
Not what He can give me. He is the reward. The covering. The protection I didn’t know I needed until I was a little too vulnerable.
When fear tries to sneak in (and it keeps trying!), fear of what’s next, fear of not having enough, I need to remember this line. I don’t need to aim for a prize because I already have what matters most.

Genesis 17:1
"When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him and said, ‘I am God Almighty; walk before me faithfully and be blameless.’"
God doesn’t tiptoe around big asks. This was a moment of deep direction. And it started with a name: I am God Almighty.
God gives purpose and power together. When I feel unqualified or like what’s in front of me is way out of my league, I hear this: God is the Almighty One.
I don’t have to muscle my way through a crowd of people. He walks with Me.
†
Exodus 6:7
"I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the LORD your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians."
For me, this verse speaks to identity and deliverance. Not just for a group of people in history, but for me too. This is good news!
There are days when I forget that I’ve already been brought out. The guilt, the yearning, takes centerstage. But God already called me out from it. When God says I will, He doesn’t forget. Not like when I say I will take out the trash...and then I forget.
It’s a promise. I will be your God.
I have to keep reminding myself that I don’t belong to fear or pressure or my past. I belong to the Lord who frees, carries, and calls me His.

Leviticus 19:3
“Each of you must respect your mother and father, and you must observe my Sabbaths. I am the LORD your God.”
At first glance, this sounds like rules. That’s probably residual from my childhood and the word “must”.
“You must do your homework before you can play with your friends.” “You must clean your room before dinner.”
But reading it again, I see the heart behind it.
God speaks clearly here. I am the Lord your God. He’s present, involved, and wants my life to reflect something better. He wants me to set aside time to remember who He is and stay focused on what matters most. Him.

Deuteronomy 32:39
"See now that I myself am he! There is no god besides me. I put to death and I bring to life, I have wounded and I will heal, and no one can deliver out of my hand."
Ok, ok. Technically this is an indirect “I am” declaration because God says “I myself am.” But I’m including it anyways!
Have you ever tried to hide from God? I have. I still do. It never works. Nothing gets past Him. Nothing outranks Him. There is no god besides me. That settles it. End of story.
When I feel like things are spiraling or when life feels unfair, this verse tells me who holds the final word. It doesn’t make the hard stuff disappear. But it tells me there’s a hand on it, and His hand doesn’t lose its grip.
†
Jeremiah 32:27
"I am the LORD, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?"
This one is a gut check. Because if I’m honest, sometimes I treat certain things as if they’re just too far gone. A situation that feels stuck. It’s beyond all hope. A dream that I’ve been chasing that hasn’t come to fruition. There’s a song that speaks to this, “More Than Able” by Elevation Worship.
You are more than able
Who am I to deny what the Lord can do?
It's easy for you
No really, who am I to put limits on God? Is anything too hard for Him? No! There’s nothing outside of His reach. He’s more than able.

Hosea 11:9
"I will not carry out my fierce anger, nor will I devastate Ephraim again. For I am God, and not a man—the Holy One among you. I will not come against their cities."
What a perfect follow-up to the previous Bible verse. God makes it clear. I am God, and not a man. His response is different. His heart is different. I’m quick to assume that He’s disappointed or about to give up on me, but that’s not true.
He is holy. He is just. But He’s also merciful beyond anything I can comprehend. I’ve seen this in my life more than once, where I expected consequences but received compassion. Not because I earned it. Just because that’s who He is.
What These “I Am” Statements Remind Me
Each one of these verses gives language to something deep. God defines who He is in relationship, with Abraham, with Moses, with His people, and with us.
Here’s what I take away from these seven verses:
God protects. He is my shield when I feel exposed.
God empowers. He is the Almighty when I feel small.
God delivers. He calls me out of what tried to hold me back.
God draws close. His commands come from a place of care, not control.
God reigns. Nothing stands beside Him or gets the last word over Him.
God can. There is nothing too hard or too heavy for Him to handle.
God is merciful. He doesn’t operate like we do. He chooses compassion, again and again.

Final Thoughts
If you're in a place where you’re uncertain about what God is like, I encourage you to come back to these “I Am” statements.
Because when you know who God is, you stop living like you have to hold it all together. You know what I mean, because I do the same thing.
God said, I am. And that’s more than enough.
